Ocean People Inspire

A Collection of Short Stories

Edited by Evan J. Andrews

Ocean Frontier Institute Module I and Moving Together for Marine Conservation are excited to release a new collection of short stories, available electronically for free download. The collection features exciting, thoughtful, and awe-inspiring stories about the ways people connect to the ocean and coasts in Newfoundland and Labrador and the special meanings and relationships they have with these places. The connections provide writers with inspiration, and now we hope the stories inspire you!

This is a collection of short stories by emerging writers. Through multiple short story genres, the authors explore what connects people to the ocean and coasts in Newfoundland and Labrador. Readers are invited into the memories, visions, relationships, and places that inspire coastal and ocean experiences. Enriched by hand-drawn art by coastal youth, the collection shows what it means to be inextricably linked to the ups and downs of coastal and ocean life, and what the draw of this life can do to understandings of our surroundings and ultimately, ourselves.

The collection feature 16 stories about Newfoundland and Labrador, from an outstanding cohort of writers in the province who participated in the NL Writes Short Story Competition.

The competition emphasized inclusive participation, reflection, and dialogue, while featuring mentorship, feedback, and celebration. Read more about the NL Writes journey in the preface of the collection.
