This event brought together practitioners, researchers and small-scale fishers in order to exchange experiences and carry out joint initiatives, with the central objective of promoting the management and strengthening of traditional fishing territories, both inside and outside protected areas. This side event was an opportunity for an early launch of the upcoming e-book “Artisanal Fishing in Brazil.
Transformations, Methods and Governance,”. The e-book, which will be published by TBTI Global Book Series, is supported by SIANI, in conjunction with the group of experts in artisanal fishing in Latin America, and by FUNDAJ and UFPR.
The e-book volume brings together 30 works that document diverse experiences in fishing territories across 15 Brazilian states, including 17 conservation units. Case studies reveal a striking difference in the perceived transformations and effectiveness of governance and socio-biodiversity protection mechanisms between territories located inside and outside conservation units.
This event facilitated discussion on how situations of vulnerability and environmental racism have been created, on the one hand, and the development of successful governance approaches and strategies in fishing territories, on the other. One of the intended results is the expansion of the TBTI network, with the creation of a coordination in Brazil and articulation with other Latin American countries. This expansion aims to strengthen joint efforts to broaden knowledge of the role of protected areas in promoting fishing territories.
These experiences will serve as “laboratories” for dissemination in other protected areas and fishing territories. The integration among managers, researchers, and fishers is crucial for knowledge exchange and for generating impactful actions. The side event included: a) Presentation of TBTI and selected case studies from the collection; b) Participatory evaluation of the elements presented, interaction with other initiatives and participants to build a general overview of fishing territories and the role of protected areas; c) Planning and definition of agreements for joint action, including the production of technical and scientific material, the implementation of actions and the establishment of a continuous dialogue network.
