Workshop marks the official launch of the TBTI Brazil hub

The workshop’s objective was to bring together small-scale fishers and small-scale fisheries experts to exchange experiences and carry out joint initiatives, with the central objective of promoting the management and strengthening of traditional fishing territories, both inside and outside protected areas.

Call for submissions for an e-book about small-scale fisheries in Brazil

We are inviting submissions for an upcoming e-book focused on marine and inland small-scale fisheries in Brazil, which will be published in the TBTI Global Publication Series. This e-book is supported by SIANI as part of the Expert Group on Small-Scale Fisheries in Latin America.

Hub coordinators

Sergio Macedo Gomes de Mattos worked as a public fishery manager for the Brazilian Government for 37 years. He graduated Fishing Engineering from the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco, with a Ph.D. in Marine Sciences, from the Marine Sciences Institute of Barcelona, Spain. Now an independent researcher, his work still focuses on the management of small-scale fisheries and fisheries resources assessment, with an emphasis on fisheries bioeconomics and issues relating to the implementation of public policies. This approach highlights the concepts of economic and biological sustainability and calls for careful management that includes the participation of fishers and others stakeholders. He is a longstanding member of TBTI and has contributed to numerous TBTI activities.

Beatriz Mesquita Pedrosa Ferreira is a Brazilian northeastern researcher at Joaquim Nabuco Foundation (Fundaj) in Center for Culture, Identity and Memory Studies from the Federal Government. She is also a member of ICSF since 2011. She is interested in the relations between society and environment, mainly governance, marine protected areas and artisanal fishing. In recent years, she has been committed to networking in participations such as the Artisanal Fishing Nets Web, PainelMar and the Brazilian Ocean Program (HOB). She is also the editor of a Fundaj journal and an advisor to MPA council and Fisheries Local Committee. She has PhD in Fisheries Resources and Aquaculture.

Rodrigo Pereira Medeiros is an Adjunct Professor at the Center for Marine Studies (CEM) at the Federal University of Paraná, Brazil. He holds a Doctoral degree in Political Sociology from UFSC (Federal University of Santa Catarina), Santa Catarina. He worked extensively on small-scale fisheries, focusing mainly on fishing strategies, technologies, ethnoecology, and socioeconomics. He has also focused on the performance of marine protected areas and fisheries governance. Rodrigo prioritizes projects that combine research and outreach actions, in which methodology is based on participatory research oriented to action.
